Our Social Work Ph.D. program prepares students for careers in social work research, policy, and teaching. Our graduates hold faculty positions in universities around the world, and have made major contributions to social work practice, education, research, administration, and leadership. Our program is known for its diversity, as students come to UTA from many countries, regions of the US, and diverse backgrounds. Students work closely with faculty members in small-enrollment classes, and on faculty projects that provide hands-on experience with all phases of the research process, from proposals to publications. Our students publish in professional journals, present at national conferences, and submit research proposals to external funders. All students begin teaching BSW/MSW courses independently in their second year, and enter the academic job market with highly competitive experiences in both research and teaching. Students in the program receive funding, in the form of tuition waivers, graduate teaching/research stipends, fellowships, and scholarships. They benefit from strong support systems including a well-staffed advising office, and career development opportunities in professional writing, publication, job interviews, and colloquia presentations. The Doctoral Student Association is active and offers a peer mentorship program to help students navigate the role-changes from coursework to teaching and dissertation writing.
