A Revision of the GADE Quality Guidelines for PhD Programs Panel
The GADE Guidelines for Quality in Doctoral Education are updated approximately every ten years, informed by a national survey of faculty, doctoral students, deans and directors, and doctoral program directors. This panel presents results from the national survey and a forum for social work educators to discuss important findings.
Learning Objectives:
- To report results from a national survey on guidelines for assessing quality doctoral education.
- To demonstrate guidelines for various aspects of a high-quality social work Ph.D. program, both explicit and implicit curriculum.
- To identify how views of high-quality social work Ph.D. programs differ by deans, directors, faculty, and students and specific information on technology, race, equity, and inclusion practices needed to guide quality Ph.D. programs.

CSWE-GADE Partnership Presentation: The State of Doctoral Education
More social work students are pursuing doctoral degrees today (3,421) compared to 5 years ago (2,545). Numbers of enrolled students in practice doctorate programs have greatly increased from 2014 to 2019, while practice and research doctorates have added programs. At the same time, the numbers of enrolled students in research doctorate programs have decreased consistently for the last decade. This session includes a presentation and discussion of the CSWE-GADE report on the current landscape of doctoral education in social work in the United States, highlighting trends in enrollment, student demographics, program offerings, students’ goals for completing the degrees, and more.
